Landscape and Mountains

The Ethiopian highlands were formed from volcanic eruption from 40 to 5 million years ago that deposited the thick layer of basalt or volcanic rock up to 3000m deep in some places. The highlands were glaciated 2.6 million years ago the recent shows 10000 years ago. The area is characterized by steep cliffs and jagged peaks. The area’s diverse topography includes several high plateaus surrounded by gigantic eroded abysses dotted with three high peaks. Rim gedel/Abunneyossef (4284m) is the third highest mountain in Ethiopia, big zegit (4085m) and small zegit (4035m). There are other mountains to visit before you reach these three big mountains.

Generally the area’s diverse topography includes mountain chains cross cut by gorges and valleys that offer breathtaking views. From the starting point of the trek, valleys dissect the ancient agrarian landscape.The landscape then gives way to an open flat and moderate grazed mosaic of grass steppe.

SAMPLE ITINERARY:
Our starting point for all tours is Lalibela. A 5- day holiday could include:
DAY 1
Visit the 11 rock hewn churches in Lalibela.
DAY 2
Visit to monasteries in the Lalibela area either by trekking or by car.
DAY 3
A day trek to see the endemic animals and birds anto enjoy the beautiful mountain scenery and landscape.
DAYS 4 & 5
A 2 day trek to explore the culture and the local way of life.
